Nominations for the 2010 Wildflower of the Year


Each year the Salato Native Plant Program (Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources) joins with the Kentucky Native Plant Society in selecting a native wildflower as Kentucky's official "Wildflower of the Year".
Previous noted wildflowers included: Butterfly Milkweed, Cardinal Flower, Purple Coneflower, Wild Columbine, Wild Bergamot, Great Blue Lobelia, Spiked Blazing Star, Joe-Pye Weed, Orange Coneflower, Black-eyed Susan, Cup Plant and Wild Blue Indigo.
Special attributes of a Wildflower of the Year should included its native origin and common distribution in Kentucky, its easy cultivability in appropriate habitats, a known value to wildlife, and ready availability of plants or seed (at least through mail order sources) for gardeners and landscapers.
Please choose one of the Native wildflowers listed below, and send it to the Salato Native Plant Program, Salato Wildlife Education Center, #1 Sportsman's Lane, Frankfort, KY' 40601. Nominations must be received no later than January 15, 2010. Send your nomination to: Salato Wildlife Education
Nominees are: Aromatic Aster, New England Aster, Smooth Beardstongue, Blue Star, Ciaver's Root, Mistflower, Wild Quinine, Slender Mountain Mint, Rattlesnake Master, Rose Mallow, Ox-eyed Sunflower, Swamp milkweed, Autumn Sneezeweed, Rough Blazing-star, Yellow Coneflower and Pale Purple Coneflower.

 

Kentucky State Parks Offer Coupon For $55-A-Night Lodge Rooms

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky State Parks are celebrating their 85th anniversary this year by offering lodge rooms for $55 a night, week-days August 2009 through February of 2010.

The discount is good with a coupon Sunday through Thursday at all 17 resort parks. The coupon can be printed from the Kentucky State Park web site at www.parks.ky.gov or the Department of Travel site at www.mykentuckybackyard.com

Kentucky State Parks offer excellent scenery, adventure and hospitality. Besides lodges, most resorts also have cottages and campgrounds, along with hiking trails and other recreational opportunities. All resorts have full service restaurants. For more information about each of the 52 Kentucky State Parks, visit the web site.

A limited number of rooms are available at each park. The offer is not good on holidays and cannot be combined with other offers. The discount applies to leisure travel only.

This offer will be good at 12 resort parks during the month of October (see list below).
